In June 1995, during the International Aerospace Exhibition in Paris, the Airbus consortium announced plans to develop a new modification of the A340-200 airplane capable of non-stop flights over 14,000 kilometers.
The Airbus A340 is a long-range, four-engine, turbojet-powered, wide-body passenger airplane. Production of the A340 was discontinued in 2011.
It is generally similar to the A330; the A340-300 and A330-300 are the same except for the number of engines (four for the A340, two for the A330) and the number of landing gear struts (the Airbus A340 has 4 landing gear struts and the Airbus A330 has 3 landing gear struts).
The Airbus A340-600 was the world's longest passenger aircraft with a fuselage length of 75.36 meters until the launch of the longer Boeing 747-8 version at 76.25 meters.
As of May 2006, 389 airplanes had been ordered and 319 delivered; for 2020. - 380 units.
