Avtandil Gurgenidze's sketch for the painted AN-24 airplane
In 2014, the artist Avtandil Gurgenidze began a series of sketches for the upcoming large-scale painting of the AN-24 aircraft. These works became the foundation of his aviation art experiment, combining the symbolism of the aircraft with his own style. This series of sketches played a key role in shaping the final design of the aircraft, which later became an artistic decoration of Kyiv Zhuliany Airport in 2015.
The artist spent two weeks painting an old AN-24 passenger plane in the hangar of Kyiv International Airport, which was installed in front of the terminals of Kyiv International Airport on the night of October 29, 2015. The main feature of this art object is that the image on the plane's body was applied by the artist by hand with brushes.
Avtandil Gurgenidze is not only a painter, but also a famous monumentalist, a graduate of the Tbilisi Academy of Arts (1979). He has held more than 50 solo exhibitions around the world. In 2015, he became the first artist in the world to hand-paint an AN-24 airplane, turning it into an aviation art object that adorned Kyiv. This sketch is a transition from preparation to art painting of a real airplane.
