The F-16A is a single-seat, multi-role fighter aircraft designed primarily for daylight operations. This is the first production version of the F-16. The aircraft of this modification were powered by twin-circuit turbojet engines. The weapon control system consisted of a pulsed Doppler radar that provided the F-16 with all-weather capability (which was not envisioned in the design), but did not have the ability to illuminate the target for missiles with a semi-active guidance head.
Other avionics included the AN/ALR-69 radar warning device and a suspended container with an active jamming station. The fighter is armed with a six-barrel aircraft cannon, up to six AIM-9L/M/P Sidewinder short-range guided missiles, and unguided air-to-surface weapons on nine suspension units with a total weight of up to 5,420 kg.
